We are designing modern office facilities into a 1930’s property in Kamppi, Helsinki. The building was originally designed as an upper secondary school, but for the last few decades it has served as office space. The current property owner CapMan Real Estate is now commissioning a major overhaul and a loft expansion. The building’s facade is protected according to the Sr-2 regulation. In addition to the original structures, the commission includes the underground expansion designed by Juhani Pallasmaa in the 1990s.
The principal plan has special focus on the properties conversion flexibility and passageways from the building entrance to the office spaces. Transforming the cold loft into office space is an interesting design task, as we are designing new exciting office facilities within an old building frame. The changes in modern office culture pose their own challenge for the design work, but at the same time there is a possibility to create whole new interesting solutions. Functions supporting communality and office work are placed in the Kansakoulukatu property, which will host cafés and restaurants, an event space as well as meeting spaces available for rent. The work continues in 2021 with the execution of the planning and construction phase.
